Bus system with RG58 coaxial cable, was very popular (because cheap) and
needed no active components.
Could cover distances up to 180 meters.
CSMA/CD, all stations transmit on the only wire, therfore of course only
half-duplex possible and many collisions.
To cover more distance, some models of coax-hubs existed, but were not very
widespread.
Thick-cable could cover up to 500 meters, needed special pins to tap into the
center conductor in order to connect a thin cable (RG58) or a workstation.
Coaxial cable for bus-topology are definitely obsolete.
Cisco uses a twin-coax (RG6) for their 1300-series outdoor access-points,
transmits a 100MBit/s link plus 48V over more than 100 meters.
